Platteville High School Physics Instructor and HUNCH Advisor Matt Heer, along with a group of students in the "High Schools Uniting with NASA to Create Hardware" (HUNCH) program treated the Optimist Club in a full room at Country Kitchen this week. HUNCH is a NASA program that empowers and inspires students through a project based learning program to learn 21st century skills and have the opportunity to launch their careers through participation in the design and fabrication of real-world valued products for NASA. The program started with six schools in the United States doing research. Platteville got involved when they expanded from six to twelve schools in 2012. Today, over 400 schools participate in HUNCH. There are eight different HUNCH programs that include: Design and Prototype; Software; Hardware: Sewn Flight Articles; Video & Media; Culinary; Biomedical Science; and Flight Configuration. Platteville participates in the "Design and Prototype" program where they work to bring exciting new ideas to NASA engineers and astronauts. The group partners with UW Platteville's ASME organization and UWP Rocket Club and utilizes the HUFF Family Innovation Center at the University. Matt spoke about how he got involved with HUNCH, some of the unique experiences he and his students have had in the program and the students in attendance shared information on the projects they are currently working on.
