Mattie Schutte left her home in Berlin, Germany to spend the school year as a foreign exchange student at the Platteville High School. She and last week's speaker, Nadia de las Rivas are both staying with Optimist Amber Monroe. Mattie has had to adjust from living in a large metropolitan area to the much slower pace of our small city.

She shared pictures of festivals in Germany, which almost always include German beer. Both large and small Christmas markets are also popular. Large groups of people enjoy a popular festival similar to Mardi Gras in that many participants wear costumes.

Mattie showed pictures of her home, favorite restaurant, beautiful mountains and landscapes, castles and other historic buildings, along with a remaining section of the Berlin Wall which has been painted and turned into a piece of art.

There are 3,500 kinds of bread available in Germany. Mattie has been searching for the perfect loaf of bread since arriving in Wisconsin but has yet to be successful.

Mattie has a passion for music and theater. She plays several instruments and has continued to learn more during this school year. She competed in gymnastics and recently joined the high school golf team.

Both Mattie and Nadia talked about being surprised that sports are offered in schools here. In Spain and in Germany club sports are offered outside of school but there are no school teams.

Both Nadia and Mattie chose Culver's as their favorite place to eat.
