Richardson becomes safety instructor "by accident"

Bruce Richardson Clark Anderson, Bruce Richardson and Optimist President Terri Ellis

On Friday October 31st, our speaker was Bruce Richardson, a hunter safety instructor and pheasant guide for Wounded Warriors.  Bruce became a safety instructor “by accident”.  He was turkey hunting in 1991 when he was shot by a companion.  After repeatedly being asked to speak at various safety courses and subsequently encouraged to become an instructor, he did.  Bruce said hunter safety focuses on TABK:

  • Treat every gun as if it were loaded

  • Always point a gun in a safe direction, front and back

  • Be certain of your target

  • Keep your finger off the trigger guard

It was also a circuitous route that led him to become a pheasant guide.  He reluctantly purchased a hunting dog, then was contacted about being a guide because the dog did so well.  The wounded warriors represent a wide range of experiences, and each trip is rewarding because of what the trip elicits for the veteran.
