Scoutmaster Jason Tyson and PHS Senior Glenn Mast shared scouting facts and their scouting experiences over the years with the Optimist Club. Jason explained that the name was changed from Boy Scouts of America to Scouting America to reflect that girls are also members. He spoke about the local scout units being Pack 89 (Cub Scouts grades K-5), Troop 82 (Scouts ages 11-17 - first all-girl troop in the Platteville area) and Troop 84 (Scouts ages 11-17 - boys). He mentioned that Platteville will have their first girl earning an Eagle Scout badge soon and was excited to share that the scouts will be going on a High Adventure trip at Philmont Scout Ranch in New Mexico in 2026. Glenn talked about the various service, leadership, personal growth and activities he's experienced throughout his scouting years, including the week long National Youth Leadership Training course he took. He also spoke about Canyon Camp at Apple River where he worked as a swim instructor and lifeguard this past summer, which was the camps' 89th year.
Scouting builds leadership through experiences and service. It keeps youth engaged with meaningful and fun activities and connects Platteville youth to once-in-a-lifetime adventures.
