Sports Editor Jason Nihles-Keeping us Covered

Updated: Aug 23

Sports Editor Jason Nihles with Optimist President Bob Hundhausen

Jason Nihles realized in 4th grade that the track in life he wanted to be on was related to sports and he loves that doing things for fun became his job. Jason is from Lancaster and has always loved sports, numbers, and statistics. He started his college career seeking a degree in business but realized quickly that he couldn't leave sports behind and he wasn't a salesperson. He graduated from Stevens Point in Journalism and was hired in 2003 to work for Morris Newspapers where he is the Sports Editor for The Platteville Journal, Fennimore Times and Boscobel Dial. Interestingly, Jason's boss had covered him during his high school sports career. Jason covers all high school sports at Platteville, Belmont, Potosi, Iowa Grant, Fennimore and Boscobel in addition to UW-Platteville. He shared how he manages his time and juggles his weekly duties which include attending games typically every Thursday and Friday evening, typing up notes, emailing and interviewing coaches, writing his articles, and designing the newspaper pages.

Jason is aware that newspaper and print is dying but information found in newspapers is not. Every Platteville Journal newspaper subscription includes an online subscription, which continues to become more popular amongst readers. He loves his job, the sports and teams he covers, and the freedom and flexibility he has within his work. For small town newspapers, Morris Newspapers has excellent designs and looks and competes with the larger papers. Jason excels at keeping our area sports teams covered!
