Michael Bottrell, a retired dentist, maintains a Master Personal Trainer certification. Throughout the years, he has had on going knife, handgun and jiu-jitsu training. He has earned a black belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ).
Michael spoke to the Optimist Club about the world of violence, specifically about sexual assaults. One in four women report that they have experienced sexual violence. Most cases go unreported. While we like to think that these crimes don’t happen here, statistics show that 25% of UW-Platteville students experience some kind of sexual violence.
Michael and his partner Ricardo have taught self-defense classes to men for years. When women convinced them that their lives and safety were increasingly threatened, Michael and Ricardo decided to accept women into BJJ training. They developed a 12-hour course entitled “Decreasing Violence Against Women: Increasing Honor in Men” (DVIH). Michael shared the links to a short demonstration of his training and his DVIH brochure:

He ended his talk with good news. Michael talked about the Boulder Crest Foundation and Post Traumatic Growth (PTG). PTG demonstrates that when we experience trauma, we are changed. We can use the strength that we gain by surviving the trauma to move forward to a new path.
